A graduate of Wingate University, Shannon Smiley began working at C.A.R.E./The John 3:16 Center in January of 2005 as assistant to the founding director, Juli Jenkins. While completing the coursework leading to her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, she realized how much of an effect the students’ home lives had on their school performance and wanted to help in some way. She returned home to Seaboard, NC in December 2004 and heard about the organization Juli had begun and the facility that had just been completed. It seemed like a perfect match for the desire God had given her to help children and families outside of the school environment. Shannon interviewed and decided to accept the position when it was offered. She began working with the afterschool program and learning to oversee the day-to-day operations of the other programs offered through The John 3:16 Center. Each year since has been one of personal growth, increased service to the community, and increased responsibility to C.A.R.E. In June of 2009, Juli Jenkins made the decision to retire as director and Shannon was asked to fill the position. She accepted and, with the assistance of the Board of Directors and her staff, administrates the programs offered by C.A.R.E. at The John 3:16 Center. Shannon feels that God can use the staff and support supplied to reach the community for Christ and to make positive changes in the families served.
